The domain, designed for use with the basic web browsers found on early mobile phones and PDAs, was approved by ICANN on July 11, 2005 and became available for public use on September 26, 2006. Standards and best practices for early mobile websites were formulated by the Mobile Web Initiative. The original LinkTags.mobi website comprised a series of informative web pages that were linked via a tag cloud. Designed for mobile devices, each page on the website provided informational article links that pertained to specific tag words or phrases. As mobile device displays have evolved, the need for the "mobi" domain name extension has faded. So the LinkTags website has migrated to become LinkTags.org.
